Single-beam acoustic remote sensing for coral reef mapping
نویسندگان
چکیده
Several commercial single-beam acoustic seabed mapping systems have come to market in the last decade, but the potential for mapping coral reef habitats with these systems has not been systematically documented. Three datasets from the Florida Keys, USA, and the Bahamas, all acquired by a Quester Tangent Series V (QTCV), revealed that rock and sediment were reliably distinguished across multiple survey sites with accuracy ranging from 74%-86%. The utility of a simple rock/sediment classification scheme for assessing fish habitat and for objectively mapping habitat based on patchiness and relief metrics are discussed.

Benthic Biotopes Remote Sensing Using Single Beam Acoustics on the South Coast of the Qeshm Island, the Persian Gulf
The study presents the result of a new attempt for benthic biotopes remote sensing in the southern coast of the Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. This survey site covers approximately 233 km2 in water depth between five and 25 m. Bathymetric data was derived from the single beam survey and grab stations, underwater video and photos were undertaken as ground-trusthing. The acoustic results showe...
متن کاملWater Column Correction for Coral Reef Studies by Remote Sensing
Human activity and natural climate trends constitute a major threat to coral reefs worldwide. Models predict a significant reduction in reef spatial extension together with a decline in biodiversity in the relatively near future. In this context, monitoring programs to detect changes in reef ecosystems are essential. In recent years, coral reef mapping using remote sensing data has benefited fr...
متن کاملRemote Sensing of Coral Reefs for Monitoring and Management: A Review
Coral reefs are in decline worldwide and monitoring activities are important for assessing the impact of disturbance on reefs and tracking subsequent recovery or decline. Monitoring by field surveys provides accurate data but at highly localised scales and so is not cost-effective for reef scale monitoring at frequent time points. Remote sensing from satellites is an alternative and complementa...
متن کاملMapping Coral Reef Benthos, Substrates, and Bathymetry, Using Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) Data
This study used a reef-up approach to map coral reef benthos, substrates and bathymetry, with high spatial resolution hyperspectral image data. It investigated a physics-based inversion method for mapping coral reef benthos and substrates using readily available software: Hydrolight and ENVI. Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) data were acquired over Heron Reef in July 2002. The spec...
متن کاملMapping Coral Reef Resilience Indicators Using Field and Remotely Sensed Data
In the face of increasing climate-related impacts on coral reefs, the integration of ecosystem resilience into marine conservation planning has become a priority. One strategy, including resilient areas in marine protected area (MPA) networks, relies on information on the spatial distribution of resilience. We assess the ability to model and map six indicators of coral reef resilience—stress-to...
